Thrive has a holistic approach to “retreat.” The women are fed spiritually by our speaker, Debby Thompson. During the afternoon, volunteers provide pedicures, haircuts, massage therapy, makeup application, photo shoots, as well as “shopping” for new clothes in the free boutique, and free books, all donated by generous donors. Self-care appointments conclude with prayer over each woman, taking them to the feet of our Lord, adding a spiritual element to a physical act, which the ladies respond to with gratitude and humility.
Women are offered time with a counselor and/or a prayer partner to process and talk through the challenges of life on the field and the current climate. It amazes the volunteer counselors of the quickness of connection and being able to offer input in a one-hour session. They have noted that most women this year have taken advantage of this special time.
Some comments we have heard throughout the day are:
S is humbled to be on the receiving end of self-care, because she is always the one pouring out. There is something special about having someone outside her circle of friends and families pray for her, because she is always amazed at how the words they took to the Lord affect her life.
S said she needs to stay healthy and well in order to minister to others and believes it is an act of worship to take care of her body, the temple of the Holy Spirit.
N teared up when she heard about the boutique. She has just come off the field and has only had thrift store clothes for years. She was thrilled to find three new outfits today. S admitted her current clothes are a bit snug and was extremely excited to pick out new outfits to return with.
As the attendees return to their families and/or countries of service, the circumstances they left behind may not have changed, but their hearts and focus have been refreshed and redirected toward the Lord.
