A Unified Team

Do you find yourself talking aloud to figure out a problem, or do you prefer long, silent reflection before reaching a conclusion? These traits indicate whether you are an external or internal processor. Understanding these differences creates better communication and balance in relationships.

So what does that have to do with a Thrive retreat? One basic part of Thrive volunteer training is discovering what type we each are, and the benefits each type brings to a relationship. Knowing how to better value each other and work together helps the volunteers unite to function as a unified team. Recognizing these traits in our attendees will help the volunteers better serve them.

Thrive knows the key to a successful, God-honoring retreat is a well-trained team. To this end, we spend the days before the attendees arrive getting to know each other, discovering our strengths and weaknesses, gifts and personalities. Many new volunteers are amazed at the well-thought-out, detailed schedule of training. One mentioned that it was intense and helpful but not wasteful. Her time was well spent in discovering more about her fellow team members.

Part of the team-knitting process occurs during mealtimes. For each lunch and dinner before the actual retreat starts, the volunteers are assigned to meal groups. We share a meal with different volunteers each time. That is an intentional part of learning to work together.

But the foundational step to all of this is submitting ourselves to God. We spend time each day worshipping, laughing, encouraging, crying, and playing together. We invite Him into each step of the process, knowing that true success will come as He does His work through us. We just aim to be suitable vessels.
