Excited chatter fills the air as 30 volunteers gather for the first time in Phuket, Thailand on Saturday morning. Friends from past retreats hug each other as we welcome twelve first-time volunteers. We are excited to see each other, but are especially excited to see what God will do in the days ahead.

Volunteers come from across the United States, but four special women (all first-timers) are from the same church in Tennessee. They attend different campuses and are getting to know each other better on this trip. They are part of a vision group sent from their church to serve, as well as to investigate how to further become involved with Thrive. Two global women supported by their church will be at this retreat, making it a great team effort on the part of that congregation to support their workers well.

Another first-time volunteer is here due to the gentle “nudging” of a friend who is a veteran volunteer. (Actually, that has been true of several volunteers. There’s power in inviting a friend). She’s at a stage in life where it is finally possible. She decided serving global women sounded like a new challenge, and she was ready. Despite the long flights to get to Thailand, she’s eager to meet the women who will be attending, showering them with the love of Christ, and serving them well.

The women bring a wide variety of gifts and talents to this retreat. We have counselors, life coaches, medical personnel, spiritual directors, stay-at-home moms, and everything in between. What we do share is love for Jesus and a strong desire to refresh and encourage our sisters who serve the Lord overseas.
