“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ–by grace you have been saved–and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:4-10

Thinking about the idea of God’s massive love for us can seem intimidating. How can we understand something so big and powerful?

Part of the beauty of God’s huge love is that He reveals it in little ways.

I was starting to feel lonely, and God provided sweet friends for me to spend time with.

I was stressed, and God provided me with time to go on a beautiful sunset jog with my roomie.

I needed to talk, and God gave me extra time and brought along dear and wise people to talk with.

Little moments like these reveal a beautiful truth about God’s love: it’s consistent. Even when we’re a mess, He loves us. His love is not dependent on what we do, but it’s rooted in who He is. I didn’t do anything to earn God’s love in those moments, but He showered it anyway.

There is never a moment when we deserve God’s love. It’s a gift that we can’t earn but can gratefully receive. As we soak in God’s love, He calls us to allow His love to spill over into the lives of the people He has placed around us. It’s challenging to show people love, and it’s especially hard when they don’t seem to deserve it. Loving people when they act unlovable takes humility, because it requires us to see the unlovable pieces in ourselves that are covered in God’s love.

One way to tangibly love people is by showing moment-by-moment love, just as we’ve received from God. Maybe we can open the door for the grumpy person behind us, allow the slow driver to go at their annoying pace, listen to our children when they tell us the same story for the hundredth time, encourage our husbands when we want them to encourage us, or lovingly speak up when someone has said something hurtful.

Let’s emulate the character of God by loving people in little moments this week. As we do, we might just find that the moments add up into a lifetime of love.

Closing Prayer
Father, Thank You that You are love (1 John 4:8). Thank You that You show us Your love, even when we don’t deserve it. We love You, Lord! Please grow our love for You, and use us as Your vessels to show Your love to people around us. Please help us to abide in Your love and to notice Your love. We praise and thank You! In Jesus’s loving and powerful Name, Amen.
Question for Reflection

When was a moment in the past week that you experienced God’s love? What’s a moment in this coming week that you can focus on abiding in God’s love? What’s a moment in this coming week that you can extend God’s love to those around you?

This past week, God showed me His love through creating beautiful skies and clouds for me to enjoy, and by having the people around me show me grace even when I was rude and stressed. This coming week, I can intentionally abide in God’s love as I travel across the country and spend many hours on a plane! This coming week, I can show the people around me at the airport (and TSA!) love by being generous and allowing others to go first.
