Self Care

Thrive’s mission is to replenish women ministering overseas. Everything we do is toward that end. Retreating is vital for these women. It’s a chance to get away from the constant need to “do” and spend time just “being”. They often feel pressured to always be “on”. Many global workers live in remote situations and are hungry for worship in community (in English) or just want to find a friend. The beautiful environment helps them escape from the everyday burdens of life in the fire.

Don’t you just love a good haircut or pedicure? Imagine trying to communicate your hair needs to someone who speaks no English and has never styled hair like yours. It can make for some interesting haircuts! Or imagine having to cut your own hair for two years!

Thrive believes that what brings true refreshment to global women is ministering to them completely - body, soul, and spirit. Volunteers have traveled here for this very purpose. The day started with a lovely walk along the beachfront. Then, hairdressers and women trained in pedicures as well as head and neck massage were standing ready to further minister to women’s bodies.

Bible teaching, worship, counselors, and spiritual directors were here for the soul, and prayer partners helped to refresh the spirit. Some women were refreshed by an uninterrupted nap (without kids) or sitting by the pool. No matter the self-care option, each woman received prayer from her hairdresser, counselor, etc. While this Thrive retreat probably won’t meet every single need each woman had when they arrived, by the end of the first day, most are feeling more relaxed and refreshed, with pretty toes and stylish hair, than they have in a very long time.
