Thrive retreats hold abundant reminders of the gifts of the goodness of our God.

Just being able to attend a retreat as a global worker is a gift due to generous donations to Thrive. Then there is the gift of worshiping in her heart language and the gift of good teaching from a global worker and deep discussion connecting in small group sessions. There are thoughtful gifts on their tables each morning, self-care in the afternoons, and a fun activity every evening.

The Taste of Home is a favorite activity repeated at every retreat. Picture walking into a room filled with large colorful gift bags and finding one with your name on it - it’s Christmas in October!

The women had no idea when they were asked for examples months ago of what they could not get in their country of service, the items would become a wishlist purchased and brought by the volunteers.

The attendees sat down by their mystery bags and eagerly waited for the countdown. 5-4-3-2-1! Tissue paper flew and the room was loud with laughter and some happy tears as they held up their assorted gifts. Velveeta and Rotel! Gluten-free brownie mix! Cinnamon Crunch cereal! Wheat Thins! Spam! Pumpkin purée and cinnamon spice! Lotions and candles! Fruit of the Loom undies! Taco seasoning! Trader Joe’s anything! These small gifts held big meaning because they were personalized. Just a little taste of home.

But where is “home” for these women who have left North America and settled cross-culturally?

“Home is (my country of service)—we’re settled here as a lifetime commitment.“ "I am home here, much to the disappointment of my parents who thought this was just a phase.” “Home is not here or there, maybe it’s on the plane between the two?” “I can’t wait to go to my parents’ home for the holidays.” “Home is where the heart is.”

We’ve been talking about how home is wherever you’re seen, known, and loved. And tonight, among their sisters-in-Christ, they feel seen, known, and loved as they sang…
All my life You have been faithful
All my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
I will sing of the goodness of God
