A Series of Unfortunate Events

Traveling halfway around the world isn’t for sissies. Such was the case with Megan, a first-time volunteer who flew to Cape Town from the U.S. East Coast. The 2-day trip ended up being nearly 27 hours longer! Due to a major oil spill on Cape Town’s only international runway, her plane was diverted first to Johannesburg, nearly 700 miles away - only to discover there were no hotel rooms available, so then on to Durban. She finally arrived at the Thrive hotel in Cape Town at 2:30 a.m., the first day of the retreat.

But God had planned that Megan would attend this retreat. Jan, a veteran Thrive volunteer at her church, had invited her many times, but this year, Megan finally said, “Yes”. She grew up as a global traveler, has worked overseas, and understands the importance of caring for women who work globally. She serves as a school counselor, so the Lord also graciously orchestrated events to have someone cover her job while she is away. Even though she was sleep-deprived, she showed up on Day One bright and early for the welcome and training sessions.

Megan is one of several women here today whose travel plans were greatly rearranged due to the oil spill. We know none of this is outside of God’s sovereign control. It makes me think He will move in a mighty way this week, as so many have persisted in traveling here despite extremely challenging circumstances. Will you join us in praying that Megan and the other volunteers who arrived in the wee hours of the first day get some good rest before the attendees arrive? And pray for each volunteer to greet with expectation all that the Lord will do this week.
