You are NOT a Snake Plant

by SARAH SEEFELDT ISOLATION & LONELINESS Abide Feeling known & understood
You are NOT a Snake Plant
“So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.”
Exodus 2:25

Snake plants are a distracted plant lover’s dream. They grow in low light or any dark corner of the house, can be neglected for days, and don’t need much water.

You, dear sister, are not a snake plant. You were created for community and care. You are designed to thrive by sharing your gifts with others and allowing others to speak into your life.

But ministry can become isolating. Sometimes we don’t have community around us that helps us thrive. Sometimes cultural differences leave us feeling confused and lonely. Sometimes our role in the community (as a leader or a professional in ministry) separates us from everyone else.

First of all, take to heart that your Father sees you. In Exodus 2:26 the Amplified translation says, “God saw the sons of Israel, and God took notice [of them] and was concerned about them [knowing all, understanding all, remembering all].” The English Standard Version says simply, “God saw the people of Israel—and God knew.”

God knows what you are going through. He knows what your heart longs for. He is not far off but is intimately concerned about you, remembering all that He has asked of you. Yes, He asked you to go to this people group, to love them and serve them and bring His hope and truth to them. And His goodness and His care is toward YOU – not just those who you minister to. He knows what you face – in fact, He knew it long before you did. He knows what it is to pray for those you care about and to be isolated from them (remember the garden, when the disciples slept while Jesus labored in prayer?).

Draw strength and joy from the care of your Father. Then, reach out to community as you are able. If you don’t have anyone near you who you can draw close to, pray for a friendship you can grow long-distance. The prayers and encouragements of sisters can be just as strengthening from across the world as next door. The Holy Spirit connects us – through borders and across oceans.

Grow a snake plant but don’t try to be one. Press into the vine.

Closing Prayer
Father God, thank you for your nearness to us. When I feel lonely from you, remind me to draw near to you. When I feel lonely and isolated from others, help me to draw near to you, to rest in your love, and from a secure place of being known and loved, let me reach out to others. Thank you, Jesus, for making the way for me to draw near by allowing me to claim your righteousness and not forever be separated by sin. Amen.

Question for Reflection

What is one step I can take today against loneliness?

Today a beneficial step for me would be to tuck back into the vine. Intentionally praying that I would find my rest and trust in God today, looking to him for strength and daily breath. Then I will pray for him to put on my heart someone I can reach out to with a prayer or encouragement. If I can move from strength (in Him) to strength (given to someone else), I can fight against loneliness and the lie of isolation.
