The new NGO owner asked Talia and Priscilla to stand up and share how they grew their NGO from the ground up. This was to inform all the new staff, so everyone would know how it all started. There had been some highs and some lows over the years, but despite the challenges, God had provided all the necessary needs and grown the work. Talia mentioned a few people who had volunteered over the years (people who were not in the room to hear their names mentioned), but then I wondered why wasn’t she mentioning me. After all of my volunteer hours and the thousands of dollars I had fundraised to also contribute over the years, especially when they had faced though times. My name was never mentioned, not even once.
I drove back home feeling unappreciated and taken for granted. When I made it home. All I was thinking about was how much I was actually going to miss Talia and Priscilla. So, in the midst of that emotion, I sent them an audio message to let them know how much I had appreciated knowing them for over a decade and how much I was going to miss them.
Priscilla sent me a message expressing they could not stop crying and were deeply moved by my message. She thanked me, encouraged me and she ended her message by saying: “Remember that what you are doing is for the Lord, no one else.” Her words pierced my soul with a deep conviction that this is what was most important. Her words were echoing Colossians 3:23 which says “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” It was a timely encouragement that reminded me that even if I had not been recognized in the eyes of men for all I had done for the Lord, He (God) knew all about it and I needed to continue serving Him without expecting to be praised by man; God would praise me in due time. Priscilla’s words immediately brought healing to a heart that had begun to be contaminated with offense, self-pity and an attitude of contempt which is always breeding ground for other deadly emotions like pride, bitterness, and so much more.
Our words have power… for the tongue has the power of life and death (Proverbs 18:21) and the words of the wise bring healing (Proverbs 12:18). How will you use your tongue today?
Are there any positive or negative words that were spoken over you or about you in the past that are still impacting on your life?
Positive words can change your destiny. Many years ago, my parents immigrated from Senegal to France. They decided to move because they wanted to give us opportunities at a better future. From the moment I and my siblings were born, they seemed to never stop pushing us, encouraging us by speaking life over us. One of the things I will always be grateful to God concerning my parents is that they were great at always giving us words of affirmation and telling us that we could do whatever we wished to do in life and we could become great people. To them there was no limit to what we could dream and achieve. They never missed to remind us how smart we were, how beautiful we were and how proud they were of us and I BELIEVED THEM. I had heard it from the crib up to my teenager years before I embarked to America at the age of 17 to live the very dream my parents had told me I could live. At 17, my parents invested in my dream to go to America. They supported me and encouraged me to follow my dream. My parents’ positive words have built me up to become the strong woman of God that I am today and I will always be grateful to them for the words of life, encouragements and unlimited impossibilities they spoke over me and my siblings for without them I wouldn’t be where I am today.
