“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Hebrews 13:8

The word “transition” is one that I say quite often. After all, it’s in the mission statement of our organization. It’s the work I do every day: transitioning orphaned youth into independent living in Haiti. And while I’ve learned many things about transitions over the years, let me tell what I know most to be true. No matter where you are now or where you want to be, the space in between the two is often the most difficult.

A few years ago, my family transitioned back to States after being away for seven years. Although we mourned saying goodbye to the life we had built in Haiti, we knew it was time. Our ministry was ready to be led by the local leaders, our kids needed to be near their grandparents, and my husband had new career opportunities opening up for him. So after months of prayer we made the decision to uproot our family from the only home our kids had ever known and return to a culture that, quite honestly, now felt foreign to all of us.

Looking back, making the actual decision to move home was the easiest part of the transition process. It was the time in between the decision and the moment we finally settled into our new house a year later that was the hardest on us all. It was packing the boxes. Saying the goodbyes. Feeling displaced. Breaking old routines while learning to create new ones. Our lives were changing rapidly, and it is rare that such change is easy.

Thankfully, there was one thing that never changed. No matter where my family was in the transition, Jesus was the same. His love and care of us never wavered. Never altered. Never left our side. Jesus was the same before the transition, during the transition, and is still the same today. And He is your one constant too. If you are currently in a season of transition, find peace in that truth. Meditate on it daily. Say it out loud. Write it on your bathroom mirror. I had to do all three. And I promise, it helps!

Closing Prayer
Jesus, you know firsthand how much change we humans must endure on Earth, and how hard many of those changes can be. Thank you for being our one steady and faithful constant. Our Savior who we know will never change. When the world around us seems chaotic, we can turn our eyes to you. And you will be there. The same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Thank you, for you know exactly what we need. We love you. Amen.

Sermon: Trapped in Transition by Pastor Steven Furtick from Elevation Church I love this sermon because it gives some wise and practical advice on how to faithfully navigate seasons of transition.
Question for Reflection

Have you gone through a transition recently in your life? If so, what helped you to make it from one side to the other?

My family and I recently made a hard transition, one that required all of us to leave some place familiar and put ourselves out there with people we did not know. The transition was scary and intimidating for all of us, but doing it together made it much easier. I truly believe finding people to walk through seasons of transitions alongside you can make all the difference. This doesn’t necessarily mean they, themselves, need to be going through the same transition. But find someone who will commit to journeying with you and be your support when needed.
