The Miracle of the Church Parking Lot

by HEIDI J. SMITH WORSHIPING GOD Worshiping God
The Miracle of the Church Parking Lot
“For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it: you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”
Psalms 51:16-17

Have you ever noticed that Sunday mornings are difficult?

My husband and I quarrel. My kids struggle to get out of bed and can’t find matching clean clothes.

On the way to church, someone spills something and I realize that I never started the crockpot.

Everyone is grumpy until we walk through the church doors, and POOF, without the tap of a magic wand, everyone smiles and says, “Good Morning!”

Outwardly we look ready to worship God, but inwardly we are a mess.

Why are we so good at putting on our Sunday best and pretending that we have it all together when inwardly we are a hot mess?

“For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it: you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” Psalm 51:16-17

King David knew offering sacrifices and burnt offerings was meaningless unless his heart was right with God. The same is true in our worship of God.

Worshiping God isn’t about going through the motions of attending church, singing, and plastering smiles on our faces, but rather, worship requires being authentic and vulnerable before the Lord.

Proper worship requires a humble, repentant heart.

We need to be still, confess our sins, and ask the Lord to open our eyes so that we can focus on our great God. We marvel at who He is and what He did for us, even though we don’t deserve it.

As we do, our awe fuels our desire for obedience and worship. This isn’t limited to church, but anytime and anywhere we stop and meditate on our God.

So if you come to our home or see us driving into the church parking lot, please know we are still a mess, but by God’s grace He is working on our hearts and He loves us - just like He does you.

Closing Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for who you are and what you have done for us. Thank you for loving us and sending your Son. Please give us hearts of worship. Help us to be still and remove distractions. Help us to confess our sins and focus on You. Please give us a taste of your goodness and glory. Help us to worship you in church, but also throughout the day and wherever we go. Help us to worship in the everyday tasks like washing dishes, hosting teams, and walking our dogs. May we be women of praise all around the world. In Jesus’ name, amen.

One of my favorite places to worship God is on my morning walks. Everyone is still sleeping and the sun is just peeking out. No one needs me and I can walk and talk with the Lord. I can pray and worship Him.
