“Oh, how abundant is Your goodness, which You have stored up for those who fear You and worked for those who take refuge in You, in the sight of the children of mankind!”
Psalms 31:19

When you are looking for something, you are more likely to find it. Sounds like a very obvious old Eastern proverb. But it’s true. You have to be aware of what you are looking for or it will pass you by without realizing it was there.

I think this is true about God’s goodness to us. It can show up in so many big and small ways throughout our day but if we aren’t watching for it, the busyness of life can distract us. I had an example of God’s goodness recently and I had about 400 reasons to not miss it! We are currently living in a rented, 200-year-old home. There are a lot of fun aspects of living in this piece of history but there are challenges too. This fall we started noticing wasps in our living room. There was only one or two to begin with so we bought a fly swatter and it was quite manageable. But as the days passed, the daily small visitors increased. When it got to be about 30 wasps a day, we called our rental agency. As all renters know, maintenance issues are usually not addressed in a timely manner. The days passed and the numbers kept increasing. Eventually, pest control came out to the house but only to assess the situation. They said they saw the holes in the house where the insects were entering and would speak to our rental agency and schedule a time to come back.

We continued to wait, actually wearing holes in our fly swatter from constant use. Then that Thursday came and for some reason, over 400 wasps filled our living room. It was frightening. We closed the door to the room and tried to think what else we could do. We couldn’t go in, there were far too many. Then a knock sounds at the front door. It was the pest control company! The man said he knew we were waiting for an appointment and he was driving by and thought he would stop and take care of the problem! The kindness of God. It wasn’t even the same person who came to assess the problem so I don’t know why he thought of us as he drove by. We explained the situation and he got suited up (resembling an astronaut in all the gear) and quickly opened the door. It took 2 more return visits to cure the problem but the room was livable again later that day.

God’s kindness was so evident to me that day. That’s what kept running through my mind – God’s kindness. He provided and cared for us.

We can see His goodness in hundreds of ways! Why not start a list today of ways you see His kindness! The act of looking will help in the realization.

Closing Prayer
Father, You think of me more than the grains of sand on the seashore. You love me more than I can imagine. Help me to see Your goodness and Your love for me today. May I have eyes to see and may I rest my mind, my identity, my faith in Your faithful goodness. And then, Lord, from that place of refuge may I tell others about the goodness that I have experienced in You so that they might know You too. Bring glory to Your Name and bring many to You please. In Jesus’ Name, amen.

Here are the first 5 things that came to mind as I think about God’s kindness to me today:
Rain outside to keep the green that I appreciate seeing in this busy city.
The gift of our dog sitting next to me right now and the joy this animal brings to my children.
We have been wasp-free for 2 months!
We didn’t expect for our rental application to be accepted for this big old house but it was. The house is perfect for our family and ministry.
My husband found a coupon for a restaurant online and we got to go out to eat yesterday and got a great deal and tasty pizza!
