Living in Light of God’s Unshakable Kingdom

“At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, 'Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.' The words 'once more' indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our 'God is a consuming fire.'”
Hebrews ‭12:26-29‬ ‭‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

How many things have changed in your life since March of 2020? The entire world has been in an upheaval due to COVID-19 restrictions, quarantining, finding a “new normal” (I’m still not exactly sure what that looks like), and Zoom calls increasingly replacing face-to-face meetings. In addition to the global pandemic, life happens all around us. Birthdays, holidays, funerals, weddings, laughter, tears. All of these aspects of life can feel very overwhelming and very unsure. So today, let’s take a deep breath and fix our focus on our Jesus.

Hebrews 13:8 boldly proclaims, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” No matter what happens, our Jesus is constant. Instead of allowing these uncertain times in our world to lead us to worry, we can allow them to lead us to gratitude and praise that Jesus and His Kingdom are unshakable and unchanging. (And through His grace, we get to participate in His Kingdom as God’s own daughters—Romans 8:16-17!) This world will never offer us security, but sometimes we’re tricked into thinking it will through predictable patterns and normal routines. 2020 opened our eyes to the reality that this world is not certain, but we have constant security and hope in our eternal King (see Romans 15:13). Not only do we get to experience God’s eternal goodness, but we are also called to demonstrate His goodness. Our Father calls us to reflect His longevity to a world searching for security.

In Philippians 3:13-14, we read Paul’s earnest and compelling words: “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Paul was faithful in His ministry, pressing on toward that unshakable Kingdom that God invites us to participate in for all eternity. We are aiming for a reward that is sure, and working with Jesus for a Kingdom that is everlasting (see 2 Cor. 6:1, Phil. 2:13). Let’s allow these eternal and sure goals to encourage us to faithfully follow Jesus in His calling day by day. Even in these changing and concerning times, we serve a God who is eternal and unshakable—and who has invited us into His eternal and unshakable Kingdom. Will you join me in praising God for His faithfulness to us as we reflect that faithful love to a needy world?

Closing Prayer
Oh Father, we praise You for Your unshakable Kingdom and eternal presence. We thank You for the gift of knowing that we have eternal life in You that is secured by the blood of Your Son (John 14:2-3). Please help us to live in light of Your eternal Kingdom each day, and to let go of things that do not matter in light of eternity. Please fill us with Your peace and use that peace to point others to You. We love and rejoice in You, Abba! In the eternal Name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Song: Hymn of Heaven by Phil Wickham This song is such a beautiful and powerful reminder of our eternal inheritance. We get to participate in God’s goodness and Kingdom through the gracious gift of God! Let’s rejoice and rest in His eternal promises as we let these words saturate us with His truth (see John 14:6).
Question for Reflection

We are called to be like Christ, sure and steady as we faithfully live out God’s calling (see Eph. 4:14-16). This peace in the face of a stressed-out world can point people to Christ and His reigning peace (see John 14:27, 16:33). How can you allow the Spirit to cultivate a stable presence in you as you interact with the people God has placed around you this week?

Instead of dwelling on my own circumstances and uncertainties, I can remind myself of God’s truth and eternity. I can write one of the verses we read today on my mirror so that I see it each morning and am reminded to put my faith in God. As people around me ask how I am doing, I can resist the urge to make “I’m overwhelmed” my immediate response, but take the time to honestly answer them and tell them about my gratitude for God’s presence even in the midst of feeling overwhelmed. These small changes will help to position my heart in a place of receiving God’s peace and sharing it with others, instead of focusing on bragging about my busyness or finding worth in my accomplishments.
