We have a saying in Ireland: “If you don’t like the weather, stick around because it’s sure to change.” All year round we dress in layers, ready to shed one if the sun makes an appearance or quickly grab another as the rain lashes down.
Just as surely as the weather changes so, too, does life. From late night study sessions to full time work; from newlywed adjustments to silver anniversaries; from parenting littles (and then bigs) to menopausal challenges; from raising support to seeing fruit come from it; over the years, seasons of life fade in and out and sometimes overlap.
But our heavenly Father remains constant. Throughout our various seasons of life, God remains faithful, and infinitely so. His love never fails. His goodness permeates every circumstance. His mercies remain fresh each morning. His patience outlasts the most stubborn of hearts. His wisdom withstands the test of time. His holiness proves incomparable. God’s dependable, immutable character holds fast even as our seasons of life ebb and flow.
What does this mean for us? As we turn to God and trust Him in each season, our faith deepens, our love for God expands, and our understanding of the gospel matures. Just as the Israelites used stones of remembrance to mark God’s faithfulness, we look back on our seasons and see the milestones of God’s faithfulness in our own lives. It’s what helps us endure the season we’re in or face the one that is to come. God’s constancy gives us security and hope.
So when we cram for exams, we trust God with the results. Through the exhaustion of meeting children’s needs, we look to God for strength and energy (and patience!) to get through the day. As we face the demands of learning a new language and culture, we lean on God our Rock to keep us steady. And when our emotions and hot flashes fluctuate with our hormones, we cling to God’s grace for self-control and good humor. For our God never changes, and we can depend on that.
What milestones of God’s faithfulness can you recall from a previous season of life? How does that encourage you today?
When our children were little, I struggled to keep up with our pace of life. Then the Lord brought a wonderful colleague to our team who saw me. Not only did she fold the pile of laundry on my sofa when she visited, but she went to bat for me and asked that my ministry workload be decreased. This encourages me today because not only did she see me, but my Father in heaven saw me too. His compassion and care reach into the mundane details of life, and I’m so grateful for that!
