A couple is leaving our church because of a job change. On their last Sunday they were sharing of their new plans and expressing how much the church has been a blessing to them. The woman had come to know Jesus as her Savior through our church. She expressed what it was like to come to church in the beginning and what a weird experience it was for her. She explained, “When you grow up not having any experience with God or the fellowship of Christ followers, entering a church community is a really strange but good experience.”
This makes me think of the verse, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35)
Living as a global worker in a culture where Christianity is the minority, I am often looking for ways to share the hope of Jesus. This verse and what the lady said stood out to me the other day and impacted me afresh! Let people see how we love! I can be a light and blessing by inviting people in to see our love! So I have decided to invite, invite, and invite!
Hospitality is an intentional and beautiful way to minister. I knew that before, but this verse gave me renewed purpose and energy for hospitality! And I am taking it to a new level! I’ve thought of many reasons to invite: birthday parties, painting parties, game nights, Discovery Bible studies, children’s craft afternoons, baking contests, even murder mystery meals! I made a list of the people in my life right now that I can invite over as I host these different events. Some of them are believers and some are not. It is my prayer that as I practice hospitality, the believers who come will be encouraged and the non-believers will sense the love of God and want to know more of Him!
Will you join me? Grab a pen and paper and ask the Lord who you can show hospitality to in the next month. In what creative ways can you have fun showing and experiencing the love of God to others? Let’s show people what it is to be disciples of Jesus as we love one another well!
What has been the best invitation you have ever received? (Aside from God’s invitation to become a child of His)
In the early years of our ministry in France, I didn’t speak French very well. It was humbling and hard to engage and make friends with the language barrier always being a challenge. I remember being invited to a New Year’s party. It was with a bunch of people my age and I was so thankful to be included! I felt seen and loved on even when I wasn’t able to be completely myself because of my lack of language. Just to be included meant so much to me.
