Stirring her soup, my friend leaned forward and whispered, “Sorry I haven’t told you sooner, but I had two miscarriages this year.”
Her blue eyes filled with tears as she held back a sob. “I wasn’t sure I could get pregnant since I’m older. But when it happened, I was shocked, excited…devastated.”
I grabbed tissues from my purse while the waitress asked if we needed anything else. We shook our heads.
She continued, “I’m afraid. What if I miscarry again? What if I can’t have children?”
The fears spilled out while our tears fell.
When have you been afraid?
The virgin Mary was “deeply troubled” when the angel greeted her and told her of her upcoming pregnancy.
I can only imagine Mary’s fears: What if Joseph divorces me? Will my family believe me? Will my community shun me?
Yet, Mary said, “I am the Lord’s slave. May it be done to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38).
She set her fears aside and submitted to God’s plan even though she didn’t know the outcome. She trusted God to take care of her and believed His will was the best.
Mary remembered that the prophets had predicted an upcoming Messiah, and the angel reassured her of God’s presence and power (Luke 1:28,37). She leaned on His faithfulness.
She recited Scripture. She had disciplined herself to live by faith rather than fear by renewing her mind. We can do the same.
We all face fears that can easily consume us. It is ok to feel afraid, but we can’t camp there. We need to fight against our fears by taking our thoughts captive and trusting God for the future.
We can renew our minds by listening to uplifting music, memorizing Scripture, and being thankful.
We can remember God’s faithfulness by focusing on God’s character, spending time in the Word, reviewing answered prayers, and sharing God stories with others in our Christian community.
As we face our fears, may we renew our minds with Scripture and remember His faithfulness. Even though we don’t know the future, we can take comfort in the One Who does and submit to His will like Mary did.
What fear are you facing? What “what ifs” are running wild in your mind? To fight against your fears, what Scripture can you mediate on? And remember a time when God was faithful to you?
I’m facing the fear of finances. In the last month, our septic system needed replaced, our wash machine broke, and our van needed repair. Our family has had several medical procedures and a surgery. What if we can’t pay for all these bills when they arrive?
“My God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19
When our family was preparing to move overseas, we needed money to ship our things in a container.
We prayed for two weeks and the Lord provided a check in the mail.
You would think since God has always provided for us that I won’t worry about finances, but I do.
I’m trying to discipline myself to memorize verses on God’s provision and keep reminding myself of his continued faithfulness. I started a journal to help me remember.
