As we gather for our last day together, we can’t help but wonder if all our plans and work have made a difference, if it’s been enough. Did the physical presents bring the gift of love, appreciation, and affirmation that we had hoped? Did the schedule allow for a good balance between connection with people and solitude with Jesus? Did we offer a safe space for lament and also for open-hearted laughter as we had planned? Did we help them to set their eyes on the Lord? Was it enough?
If only we had unlimited space to share the responses from global women that confirm a satisfying answer to those burning questions! Perhaps Kay’s story can give you a glimpse…
Kay came back for home assignment with clear evidence that the stress of ministry and cross-cultural life can take its toll – she lost most of her hair, and as a result, she completely shaved her head. Even as she walked through the doors to the retreat, she was fearful, self-conscious, and carried a sense of shame. She came in a posture of tearful trust - and the tears wouldn’t stop flowing. So, she chose to visit the facial room, thinking that such a benign place would not promote tears, and she could forget her deepest shame. As she relaxed there, with cream on her face, the gentle voice of a loving volunteer asked, “May I also massage your scalp?” She received that massage as God’s hands of blessing and tender care. Kay wept tears of joy as a sense of peace and loving acceptance slowly penetrated her soul.
Then, as Kay shared the beauty of that moment with the entire retreat gathering, we wept joyfully with her because of God’s kindness through simple, accepting words and a gentle touch.
Thank you, Lord, for confirming that when we offer our gifts to You, we can be sure that it will be enough – that it does matter!
