Who are my people?
Whether we’ve asked ourselves that question fresh off the boat in our country of service or having lived there for years, still wondering if a soul friend is too much to hope for…
Whether we’re transitioning via a short-term home leave or a long-term resettlement in our passport country, unsure of who has time for us or who we can trust…
Each of us longs to be known, and friendships are a challenge no matter where we are on the globe.
Loneliness sometimes takes us by surprise and sometimes threatens to take us under. We find ourselves needing each other, while trying hard to not be too needy. Sometimes I need you to toss a life jacket to me and sometimes you need me to toss it to you. But isolation can make us feel invisible and doubt that anyone out there knows or cares.
What has the invisible feeling of loneliness felt like for you? How has Thrive helped you to experience connection with like-hearted global women?
“The mission of Thrive is to journey with women ministering overseas by providing spiritual resources, transformative experiences, and authentic one-on-one relationships to replenish them as they invest in Kingdom work.” Testimonies bear witness to the fact that friendships formed through Thrive’s virtual gatherings or in-person retreats have been significant answers to prayer and have helped to keep us going.
What Morgan Harper Nichols writes about community perfectly underscores Thrive’s mission, in her life-giving book Peace is a Practice: An Invitation to Breathe Deep and Find a New Rhythm of Life:
“I will continue to look for ways to build community in my city, and I will continue to practice being vulnerable and making connections face to face. At the same time, I breathe deep, knowing I am a part of a large community with arms that reach out across the world. I will inhale the wisdom of friends from near and far and exhale knowing that by being in community with them, I have been part of something more.”
Inhale: The wisdom of friends from near and far
Exhale: knowing that by being in community with them, I have been part of something more.
Amen.

My loneliest season overseas was our time in central western China. I greatly missed the soul friends I left behind in the coastal city that we called home for 15 years prior. I wish I had known of Thrive then. Since returning to the US 9 years ago, God has blessed me with opportunities to connect with and come alongside global women. I have loved being part of Thrive’s devotional author team and a volunteer at Thrive Gather.
