What's Eating You?

What's Eating You?
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”
John 15:4

This is the text that showed up on my WhatsApp feed a few weeks ago: “Well, I think you’d be interested to know that I had a worm-like shape (in my) stool this morning. (It’s) about 9 inches.” My recent coworker then went on to describe the name of her expelled scrounger and current plan of action.

Parasites. Even as I tell her story my head seems to back away and my lips curl. Parasites are gross. They dwell inside a body dining contentedly while stealing life from their host.

It seems lies are the same way. We’re often not sure how they embed in us, but their destructive force gnaws away at the life we have in Christ. Here are some examples of the ones I’ve recently seen in me:

- I must not be doing what God’s asking of me since no one seems to notice.

- It’s a waste of time to pursue that person.

- No one understands or cares about what I’m going through. It’s useless to share.

- If I prayed more and had more faith, then I’d breeze through these hard circumstances.

What lies feed on you?

Lies, like parasites, are not always obvious. We don’t realize we are hosting them until we see their symptoms. With critters in our guts we might have cramps, but with the lies in our soul we more often see spoiled fruit. The last time I was irritated with my husband, God let me know my anger came from the lie that I was believing I had no value.

The Doctor of our souls wants us to be healthy. God transforms us more and more into His likeness as we tell Him the truth about our rotten fruit (words, actions), and as we ask His Spirit to help us see the lies that are spoiling His fruit. God has the answers. He longs to help you destroy what is stealing the True Life in your soul.

Closing Prayer
Dear Father, I hate it when I react to a situation in a way that veers from Your word. Would you help me come to You with those actions and ask You to clarify what is really going on in my heart? I need You to help me see the lie that I’m believing about myself or about You. Thank you, dear Father, for loving us enough to die to bring me life. Amen.
Question for Reflection

What actions in your life veer from the fruit of the Spirit?

I wrote in the devotion about reacting to my husband very strongly during a recent discussion. The lie in my heart that I had no value made me strongly need to justify my behavior. When I’m settled in the value God has given me as His daughter, I can let Him defend my actions as I simply and quietly explain.
