Transitions and Promises

Transitions and Promises
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28:19-20

I stared around the room, feeling more and more overwhelmed as I noticed the large number of books squeezed onto the bookcases and the cupboards and drawers crammed with kitchen items and dishes. I need to pack all this. My heart sank. One step at a time. I tried to encourage myself with these words, but it wasn’t working.

I had to move, and I dreaded the whole process of putting all my earthly goods into boxes, transporting them–hopefully, nothing breaks–and then finding the perfect spot for everything in my new apartment.

Life is a continuous series of transitions. Sometimes their impact is far-reaching, like getting married, having a child, or moving to the field. At other times it takes a while to notice their presence, such as the time when you suddenly realize you need reading glasses. Change is never easy, and no matter its significance, we find ourselves resisting it with all our being.

We don’t know where life will lead us, but we don’t have to fear its twists and turns because God’s promises are with us every step of the way. They come in all shapes and sizes to apply to any situation we may face.

I want to focus on one such promise, which is dear to the heart of all global workers. When Jesus sent out his disciples into the world, he assured them–and us–of his constant presence. We would never be alone, even on the other side of the world.

Therefore, we can be sure of God’s grace and strength to face whatever change comes our way–even something as mundane as moving. The Lord gave me the necessary wisdom to make the right decisions, the stamina to carry all my boxes, and the right people to lend me a hand. God also helped me adjust emotionally to my new place and turn it into a home.

When the next transition happens–as it inevitably will–may we always remember that God’s presence and his promises are with us and never leave our side.

Closing Prayer
Lord, I thank You that I don’t have to fear whatever change comes my way. I know You are with me and will walk me through every transition, both big and small. I praise You for your promises. Amen.

There are so many essential promises that it’s hard to single one out, but one promise I rely on every day (or should) is God’s promise to give wisdom whenever we ask. The older I get, the more I realize that I need God’s wisdom in every situation, even minor ones. “Lord, give me your wisdom here” is a prayer that I find myself repeating all the time.
