Titus 2 Encourager

by HEIDI J. SMITH ENCOURAGEMENT Being a woman in ministry Purpose Reflecting God
Titus 2 Encourager
“Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.”
Titus 2:3-5

Seagulls squawked while a salty breeze blew Judie’s long brown hair. Ten days of sea sickness aboard the Queen Mary seemed endless until she spotted the Statue of Liberty. America – finally! And the anticipation of seeing Aunt Lucy.

What had Momma told her?

Aunt Lucy served in World War II and fell in love with an American solider. They married, moved to America, and had a son. Eighteen months later, her world shattered when her husband died.

She remarried rich Uncle Al and had a daughter. From the world’s perspective, they had everything they desired, but she felt unsatisfied and contemplated suicide.

Remembering her unpacked Bible, given to her when she entered the Air Force, Aunt Lucy devoured it. God’s Word illuminated her sinfulness and God’s salvation which she gladly received, giving her unspeakable joy.

Aunt Lucy wrote Papa and Momma about multiple job opportunities, good schools, and of course the “good news.” That is why we left England…

A year later after settling in Ohio, Judie and her family knew Jesus personally due to Aunt Lucy’s testimony.

Judie grew up encouraged by this Titus 2 woman to serve Jesus.

Marrying her sweetheart, Judie and her husband entered full-time ministry and spread Christ’s love to all they saw. Their godly examples influenced many, including me.

Older women are to “encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands that the word of God may not be dishonored.” Titus 2:4-5 NASB

How did they do this?

Their lives matched their beliefs.

God’s Word consumed and guided them regardless of what others thought. No matter what life threw at them, Jesus remained their anchor.

Genuine love for others motivated them to open up their homes and invest in others.

All felt welcome and treasured. If others judged, they loving correctly and extended grace.

They weren’t perfect, but their authenticity attracted others and pointed them to Jesus.

Judie, now widowed with shorter hair, continues to model the Titus 2 woman for others to follow.

Judie encourages our church ladies to host a “Homes of Light” around the holidays. You invite neighbors, co-workers, etc. into your homes to play games, enjoy refreshments, and then share the Christmas story and a personal testimony. It is a wonderful way to share the gospel with ladies around the holiday. Then you can follow up with a Bible study.
I started a Titus 2 Bible study for moms where we can study God’s Word and encourage each other with parenting, marriage, and life. Mentor moms oversee smaller groups of ladies, and everyone has an accountability partner.
A friend started 14-One, an evening Bible study for working women to dig into God’s Word, share life, and have accountability.
A friend and I share praises and prayer requests via Facebook. She asks me about language struggles, homesickness, and value (Am I making a difference?). She prays for me as I parent teens and care for my aging dad.
Simple, intentional times with my daughters spark good conversations.
