There Are Just Too Many

by KAY L. GENERAL Discouragement Overwhelmed
There Are Just Too Many
“What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In the same way, your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish."
Matthew 18:11-14

Overwhelmed. Exhausted. Discouraged. There are 29 million refugees/asylum seekers as of 2018. Of those, 7,765 relocated to Cyprus where we serve. There are only a handful of organizations that help them. So many needs. So many stories. Not enough resources. Not enough hours. We can become easily overwhelmed by the work if we look at the sheer numbers of people in need. Even as I just thought of the ones that come to us, I could not see how we could help them all.

In contrast to our earthly culture of looking at statistics, methods, and results, God’s upside down Kingdom looks at the individual and the heart. We’ve heard the stories. He left the ninety-nine to find the one. Jesus sought out the one in the crowd who touched His hem. He stopped for the blind man that had been ignored his whole life. He did not focus on the sheer numbers of sick, of broken, of deceived. He saw the one and met that one right where she was at.

As I pondered this upside down concept, I remembered my Kurdish friend to whom I gave a flower. A simple purple flower. She held it up to her nose and repeatedly took the scent in. The smile on her face reached ear to ear. She told me her father’s house in Iraq had a field of those flowers. Smelling it took her back “home.” I could tell she was thinking of a happier time and place. With a tear in her eye, she thanked me for the flower and held it close to her heart. A simple flower. Not equipment, finances, or programs.

I had just stopped for one. Took time to meet her where she was. It did not change her circumstances or affect the other 29 million. For that one moment, that one person was touched by His love. We do not have to save the millions or change thousands of lives. We just need to seek out the one. We can all reach one and reaching one can make all the difference.

Closing Prayer
Father, Thank you for stopping for me. Thank you for finding me in the midst of the crowd and rescuing me. May I do the same to those You have called me to. Give me the insight to find the one in the crowd that You want me to reach today. You haven't called me to reach the masses but to love the one You set in front of me. Show me how I can be a beacon of hope and love to that one today. Thank you that You encourage my heart when I feel discouraged and overwhelmed. Help me be the same to someone today. Amen.
Resources
Movie: The Core A team of scientists attempts to reset the Earth's core rotation in order to save all of humanity. It's an overwhelming task, but one team member brings it into perspective at the turning point of the movie.
Book: Compelled by Love by Heidi Baker This is an amazing story of how loving the person in front of you can have long-lasting impact. Read through the stories of Heidi Baker and how she loved people illustrates that our “mission” can be simple.
Question for Reflection

How does concentrating on one individual at a time versus all the needs we try to fill change the condition of your heart and purpose?

What a relief that I don't have to meet it all! Thinking of reaching one person at a time is a more attainable goal. What? I don’t have to have it all together and all planned out for every person I'm helping?! What a relief both in my heart and my mind! I know He can use me to reach many, but being free to just concentrate on the one He puts in front of me is easier to grasp.
