Snuggled in my recliner and sipping my tea, I opened my Bible as the lights flickered and snapped off.
“Mom, who shut the lights off? I’m trying to get ready for school,” one of my kids hollered.
Groping for the flashlight and heading to the garage, I tried to reset the breaker only to find our electrical box melted to our house!
What in the world? A few days earlier our sewer backed up into our house and two of our kids got sick. That weekend I was preparing to teach at a ladies’ conference. Coincidence or spiritual attack?
Not every situation we encounter will be a spiritual attack, but we need to be ready. The apostle Paul exhorts us to put on the whole armor of God, stand strong, and pray.
“Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request and stay alert in this with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints.” Ephesians 6:18
Prayer can be a mindless ritual before meals or bed, but it needs to be a passionate, persistent communion with our Lord.
Too often I pray about something and wonder why God is silent. Rather than keep praying, I give up and try to handle the situation with my own strength. Or my busy schedule leads to weariness and I reason that I will pray later.
Yet prayer is powerful and we need discipline to persevere because God is working even if we don’t see it.
In the Bible, Daniel fasted and prayed for 21 days and he thought nothing was happening. But in the spiritual realm angels were fighting and coming to answer his prayer (Daniel 10:12-13).
We can pray privately or with others. We can focus on God’s holiness, His will, deliverance from the evil one, and our needs. We should pray specifically in the Spirit and not give up.
After our electricity went out, I called some of my closest friends to intercede earnestly for my family and the women’s conference. Thankfully, the Lord blessed the conference and we got a new electrical box within the next few days.
So no matter what we encounter, may we stand firm by putting on the full armor of God and praying with perseverance.
“Those who have left the deepest impression on this sin-cursed earth have been men and women of prayer. You will find that prayer has been the mighty power that has moved not only God, but man.” D.L. Moody Please share about a prayer warrior in your life and how he or she influenced you.
My mother was a prayer warrior. Every morning she would get up early to read her Bible and pray for us kids. I remember when we were in high school, my mom prayed specifically at certain times of the day for each of my siblings and myself.
Her prayers continued for us as we attended college, got married, and entered careers or ministry.
No prayer request was too little that she won’t take it before the Lord. Her list grew as her family grew. Each grandchild was prayed for specifically.
Her faithful example impressed on me the importance and power of prayer.
