“We will see them tomorrow!” I said, trying to coerce my daughter to get her shoes on at the end of a rather enjoyable visit with friends. She was so distraught because the game wasn’t finished and the other kids were still playing. She wasn’t even playing the game but she was part of the group. As I tried to reason with her that she could play it again the following day and that the same kids would be there, she emphatically proclaimed, “It won’t be the same! Because it won’t be THIS moment! I want to experience THIS moment!”
As comical as it sounded coming from a seven year old, it did make me stop and think of how many moments I miss because I am too caught up in getting to the next thing. I move on to the next meeting, the next ministry event, the next meal, the next line item of an ever-filling agenda. Do I ever stop to revel in the moment I’m in? THIS moment.
Sometimes my life can feel redundant and mundane. The growing task list can become overwhelming. In all that I do, routine or not, is there something new to be experienced in THIS moment? Could there be something that God wants to show me?”
Jesus always took in the moment. The woman with the issue of blood. The demoniac. The blind man. Peter’s mother-in-law. Each time, Jesus paused what He was doing and took in the moment and changed their lives. Let’s not forget that with the busyness of ministry, parenting, and life, experiencing small moments may be life-changing. Stop and look around so you can experience THIS moment.
What can you do to slow down and take in the moments in your life?
When I start to feel stressed or overwhelmed, I can shut my eyes and do some deep breathing exercises. Thinking about what is actually happening can slow the time down.
