Practicing vulnerability has been a journey for me. There are people in my life who want to genuinely know me, but I have a hard time allowing myself to be known. It’s funny how we can think that we’re vulnerable just because we’re willing to share things about ourselves with others. We can select the seemingly vulnerable facts that we want to share about ourselves, revealing our scars but keeping the wounds covered that haven’t quite healed yet. We feel safe when we can control what people know about us versus just letting people come close to see who we really are.
David set an example for us for vulnerability with God by inviting Him to come close and search every area of his heart in Psalm 139. He starts off the Psalm by expressing amazement that God knows everything about him. God knew him before he was born and knew what he was going to say before he said it! But despite recognizing that God already knew all the facts, David still felt the need to invite Him in at the end of the chapter.
Intimacy requires vulnerability, and vulnerability starts with inviting God and others to come close to you. We have to trust that, in our most raw, unfiltered state, we are accepted and loved by Him. We don’t have to have our lives figured out before we allow ourselves to be known. God accepts who we are and who we are becoming. Do you trust that? Are you willing to invite Him to see you fully today?
What are some ways you can practice vulnerability with God?
I love to journal with God about the things happening in my life that feel like they are emotionally affecting me. But I would like to share more with Him throughout the day, talk to Him about what I’m experiencing and how I feel. Not just the facts but pouring out my heart to Him.
