Intentional Rest

by COLETTE CORREA GATHER Rest Quiet time with the Lord
Intentional Rest
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30

At times, we can be pulled in too many directions, causing mental and physical exhaustion. Our bodies can feel the toll of burn out when we are all over the place, wearing countless hats in a single day, trying to fulfill commitments, spending hours working on projects, or taking care of others at the cost of neglecting ourselves. Our spirits, souls, and bodies scream, “I want rest!!”

Resting to find balance from our daily grind has to be intentional. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus invites us to go to Him to find rest:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Not much is required of us when we go to the Lord, just our obedience to go to him. Here are five easy intentional steps you can take as you go to your place of rest:

  1. Retreat to a solitary place.

  2. Listen to silence for a while (do not speak a word).

  3. Pray and release your burdens to the Lord.

  4. Lay down to rest.

  5. Expect the Holy Spirit to speak.

This is an invitation to intentionally rest your spirit, soul, and body as well as an invitation to listen to the Holy Spirit. Will you accept it?

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank you for bringing me to a place of quietness and rest. Refresh me, spirit, soul, and body. I am open to hear and receive from You. Here I am, Lord! Amen.
