During times of uncertainty and disorder (like the COVID-19 global pandemic we’ve all experienced), hope can seem elusive. Stamina and resilience ebb and flow as our carefully-made plans and routines crumble around us. By God’s grace, he has given us his holy Word that is enduring, living, and bursting with stories of his faithfulness during seasons of chaos.
I invite you to open your Bible and meditate with me on the story of Hannah in 1 Samuel. Her story provides us with an example of a woman of faith who cried out to the Lord for support and provision during a time of isolation, shame, confusion, disappointment, and hopelessness.
Hannah bore the weight of a struggle with infertility, and after we see her continually cry out to the Lord for provision, he blesses her with her son Samuel. While the Lord may not always grant us exactly what we ask for, let us find encouragement and hope in the proclamation of his character in 1 Samuel 1:19, “the Lord remembered her.”
Oh my sweet sisters, the Lord remembers us. And because of this, we have hope in his promises of enduring love and care.
Hannah reflects upon many aspects of the Lord’s character in her prayer in 1 Samuel 2:1-10, and provides us with an opportunity to echo these words of adoration and hope in our Savior.
Finally, let us remember the words of assurance in James 5:11, “Behold, we consider those blessed who remain steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.”
Let us remain steadfast in our hope because our Lord is compassionate and merciful, even when the world feels dark.
Can you think of a time in your past when God provided for you and granted you peace? How can that recollection give you hope that he will do that again for you?
Whenever I worked on support raising for ministry, it felt overwhelmingly hopeless every time someone said no or when churches didn’t respond to my emails. I worried that I would never be able to move to the field or that I would have to leave the field, due to lack of funding. But God always provided. In some way, shape, or form, he provided exactly what I needed, right when I needed it. In the midst of providing for me financially, he also taught me to trust in him and his timing, and through that, my relationship with the Lord grew deeper.
