God's Goodness: A Liturgy

by KAREN BRADLEY GOD'S GOODNESS Identity in Christ
God's Goodness: A Liturgy
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.”
Psalms 107:1

It never failed. No matter which church we attended in Nairobi, at some point during the service, it happened. With a slight rising intonation, the pastor would proclaim, “God is good...” The congregation would heartily reply, “...all the time!” Then, the pastor would flip it saying, “All the time...” In unison, we would joyfully announce, “...God is good!”

We believed it. We said it. We repeated it, week after week. And each time, this profound, poetic truth dispelled doubt and refueled my faith. In seasons of want or plenty, grief or joy, I held to the truth that God is good, all the time. All the time, God is good.

Throughout the Old Testament, a similar, resounding refrain echoes from those who placed their faith in the One True God.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1

They believed it. They said it. They repeated it, century after century, in seasons of want or plenty, grief or joy. And each time, it must have brought reassuring comfort and renewed hope as they waited for the promised Messiah.

Our good God kept His promise! Jesus, the promised Messiah, has come! He shows us His goodness through promise-keeping.

He reveals His goodness when we come to him with a repentant heart; he will forgive our sins so that we can be in relationship with our heavenly Father who loves us so deeply.

He shares His goodness through Jesus, the very Son of God, who offers us new life now and forever.

Jesus! Forgiveness! New life! We believe all this and that is why we can proclaim with our brothers and sisters in Christ, “God is good, all the time! All the time, God is good!”

God’s goodness never fails.

Closing Prayer
Our good and loving heavenly Father, thank You that we can read of Your goodness in Your Word, we can see it in the beautiful people around us, we can enjoy it as we worship You in spirit and in truth. Thank You that Your goodness never fails. In the name of Jesus, our good and loving Savior, Amen.
Question for Reflection

God is good, all the time! All the time, God is good! Have you been in a church that repeats this liturgy of God’s goodness?

My U.S. home church in Wheaton, IL, rarely says it during a Sunday service but friends in North Carolina told me that they often repeat it in their home church.
