If you look at the Greek word for faithfulness, it literally comes from the same word as faith. Who am I kidding? It’s like that in English too! I’ve always thought of faithfulness as a completely different concept as faith, but they’re not so different, are they? Faithfulness is just the characteristic of someone who is full of faith!
In the Bible, Sarah was faithful to God because she had faith that He is faithful to His promises and she saw the fruit of her faithfulness. Being faithful to the Faithful One is what births the miraculous in our lives! We know the story, it wasn’t a quick journey of faith for Sarah and Abraham, it was a long journey of waiting. They wavered. But when they were faithless, God remained faithful to them.
My faith in God’s plans for me wavered a lot during COVID. I moved to my current country just 6 months before the pandemic started to spread worldwide. I waited through three strict, country-wide lockdowns that had me house-bound for weeks on end. Each time a lockdown was announced, more of my plans were put on hold, and my faith that my vision would come to pass would once again be shot down. In June of 2021, I was required to make a five-year plan, but each time I tried to make progress I would start to weep. I realized that I had lost faith and trust that any of my plans would actually happen.
We may lose faith in the promises of God, but if we stay faithful to the Promiser, we won’t lose. Like the verses in 2 Timothy 2 say, if we lose faith, He will always be faithful. His faith becomes our faith.
I had to lean into God’s faithfulness in that season, trusting that He knew what He was doing. I had to learn to be faithful to Him even thought I didn’t know what to have faith for. Now I’m walking into the things I had once believed Him for, His faithfulness carried me through my wavering and into the promise.
Is there a situation in your life that you are struggling to have faith for? How can you lean into God’s faithfulness in the midst of your wavering?
I struggle to remain in faith for breakthrough for my siblings who aren’t following God. I often doubt that God can bring the victory that I long to see in their lives. I can lean into His faithfulness by remembering that He cares about their hearts even more than I do and continually surrendering them to Him.
