Don't Drop It

Don't Drop It
“In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.”
Ephesians 6:16

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1

Really? My eyes were wet as I quickly went home. I could almost feel the blood drip from my heart as I tried to make sense of what she had just said. Her accusations and assumptions were all wrong. I knew she had misunderstood a recent communication, but that fiery dart had embedded itself. The flame wasn’t out yet.

I felt like she hated me. I felt like our ministry together could never go on. I felt like an imposter as a global worker. I felt like life on the field shouldn’t be this emotionally hard – I mean physically I got it, but in my soul?

I felt so hopeless until I finally realized something else: all of these accusations that bombarded my mind were just like an enemy trying to wear down his opponent. Hey Paula, God seemed to say. This is war.

As I sat before Him, He reminded me of His Truth...

I will overcome all of this (John 16:33). I told you that you would suffer (2 Timothy 3:1). I work within you in the midst of this pain to produce endurance, character, and hope (Romans 5:3-4). I am with you (Romans 8:35). Because of My comfort during this time, you will be able to point others to Me when they are in pain. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). This is part of My testing, don’t let this surprise you (1 Peter 4:12). Look to Me as your example (1 Peter 2:21). It’s not unusual to be perplexed and hard pressed (2 Corinthians 4:8-10).

With each promise I raised my faith-shield higher. I stood before Him rejoicing. He had reminded me once again, that He was the One Who had already won this war.

Closing Prayer
Father, would you please help me to remember what faith really is? Would you help me to run to You and Your truths when I feel the darts of the enemy? Thank you, Father, for always being able and willing to help. Amen.

Question for Reflection

When do you find yourself dropping your shield of faith?

I think the hardest times for me are when the pain of war or interpersonal conflict scream in my face. I know that only by taking in the big picture of His Word can I keep perspective, but honestly, the greatest help is when I realize that we just can’t understand some things. I just need to be still before Him and trust.
