“Praise the Lord for He has heard my cry for mercy. The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust Him with all my heart. He helps me and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.”
Psalms 28:6-7

It’s been a year now since we saw the first symptoms of our son’s health problem. At first the doctors were confused. It took us four months to find a medical team who would work with us and help us. Those were dark days. Still now it isn’t over but we do have a diagnosis that makes sense. We are moving forward but there are still months of treatment ahead of us.

As I write this, I am sitting next to his bedside. He was doing well. We have seen so much progress but all of a sudden he will spiral down again. Today was one of those days. How fast my heart can become burdened and overwhelmed. How quickly the illness can appear bigger than my God. So as I sat near him to provide comfort when he would awake from his broken sleep, I opened my Bible to the Psalms. An underlined verse jumped out at me. I had highlighted it earlier in the year. These verses were a source of hope to me for this situation several months ago.

“Praise the Lord for He has heard my cry for mercy. The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust Him with all my heart. He helps me and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.” Psalm 28:6-7

What a blessing the Psalms are for us! Many of them were written in difficult moments. The fear and uncertainty of the situation is described by the writer but then he always comes back again to praise. He has to worship God because it is his source of strength and hope.

As I read this verse tonight, my heart felt a little lighter because I do trust God. He has heard my cry for mercy for my son. He is my strength and my shield. He helps me and, yes, I will praise Him. I must, because if I don’t, my fears and grief remain bigger than He is. When I worship Him, I remind myself that He is enough and He will see me through. He is with me and I place my hope in Him.

So today, let us adore Him, because He is worthy and because it is what our soul needs.

Closing Prayer
God, thank You for reminding me of Your faithfulness. Thank You for the truth and hope that Your Word shines into the dark moments. You know my fears. You know the heaviness of my heart. So I want to come to You right now and remember how much bigger You are than the difficulties of today. I trust You, but help me to trust You even more. I want to praise You for hearing my cry for mercy. Thank You that You walk this journey with us. You never leave us. Thank You for being the mighty God who loves me, knows every detail, and carries my burdens for me. I choose to worship You instead of fear today. You are worthy. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Video: Choosing to Worship Instead of Worry This is a video of a conference I taught at in Germany (that’s why I’m translated into German on stage). I taught on choosing to worship instead of worry. There are several components to the teaching session. If you want to skip ahead to the main message, start the video 12:30.
Question for Reflection

What are some Bible verses that encourage you to worship God when difficulties come?

Another verse that has meant a lot to me lately is Psalm 27:14: “Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.” God is at work, and He helps me to keep walking forward. He helps me to choose to be brave and courageous. He is my source of strength and courage.
