Recently, I’ve transitioned out of a challenging season where I had to commute and live a few hours away from my husband for a portion of each week. I’ve been looking forward to being back at home with my husband for months, but this present season still holds its share of challenges and difficulties. At church, a friend asked me how I was doing, and I honestly shared some of the pros and cons of my week. She then lovingly reminded me that at least I didn’t have the challenge of the commute and long distances anymore! I am so grateful for her reminder, because I realized I had almost forgotten about God’s goodness in removing that long, frustrating commute. How easy is it to brush past the mighty goodness of God in search of validation for our daily frustrations or comfort for our daily wants! I love how our God joyfully, lovingly reminds us to keep our focus on Him and His goodness in Psalm 145.
The simplicity and power of God’s abounding goodness blows my mind. He is always great, mighty, and beyond our comprehension. Imagine that: more goodness than we can even conceive of! Even in seasons of difficulty and incredible loss, God’s character of goodness remains. However, sometimes it’s hard to see God’s goodness when we are filled with the cares and burdens of a lost world. That’s why I love the community of the Church we see in today’s psalm; generations are telling of God’s works to other generations. People are not single-handedly recounting God’s goodness, but are recounting His character and works in community.
Does your community focus on the goodness of God? Reading this psalm convicted me that I tend to lean into complaining and gossip instead of wonder and awe at God’s character and deeds. The more we seek out God’s goodness, the more attuned we will become to His Holy Spirit and the more of His goodness we will see! This has powerful effect in drawing us closer to our Savior, and it also is a powerful way to share God’s Kingdom with others.
When we tell of God’s goodness, we worship Him and further the purpose of His Kingdom. I love how verses 10-12 phrase it—our proclamations of God’s goodness help others to know Him and His “mighty acts” (verse 12). Do you feel stuck in your witness? One simple way to witness to others is to proclaim God’s goodness and acts!
Take heart, friend. Our God is good, and is working His goodness even today. Take delight in His good presence, and allow His Spirit to open your eyes to see more and more of His goodness this week.
Today’s passage highlights the beauty, strength, and power of worshiping God by recounting His goodness in community. Who can you share God’s goodness with this week?
I can share God’s goodness with some friends from home I plan on calling this week. Instead of complaining and focusing the conversation on me, I can joyfully shift the focus to God and recount how He has shown His goodness and provision.
