Can It Be That Simple?

Can It Be That Simple?
”As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.”
Matthew 4:18-22

Follow Me.

Two words that changed the lives of twelve men forever, and in turn, the entire world. When Jesus approached the original twelve disciples, He didn’t give a laid-out plan or any details. He simply called them and asked them to follow Him.

Can it really be that simple? This grand thing we label our “calling”. It fills our hearts, minds, thoughts, and prayers so many times. “What is my calling?” we all ask ourselves, and “How am I going to fulfill it?” There are multiple tools that help us figure out what we are “made” to do. There is a plethora of books, podcasts, videos, and speakers that all focus on this illustrious concept. Some almost make it an obsession to ensure they fulfill it. But have we overcomplicated it? Jesus did not pull out a three-year plan or a manual on how He was to accomplish His great calling. He didn’t give one to the disciples either for theirs. You’d think of all the people to get details about their calling it would be the disciples since they would be the ones to start this movement called The Church.

On the contrary, Jesus’ instructions were simple. Initially, it was “Follow me”. Then it was love God and love people. As He ascended, it was “Tell everybody and show them how to love Me and to love each other.” So, I’ve modernized the wording, but in essence, the more and more I think about it, perhaps maybe He meant it to be simple.

We get bogged down by details, methods, and procedures. Perhaps if we kept it simple, we’d impact more people and not get discouraged quite as often by the overwhelming conditions of the world. As we follow Him and love Him, He puts the people in front of us that we are to love. For some, that may be focusing on their family, others expand to their friends, and others still to those that don’t know Him. Not one calling is more valuable than the other when we focus on making sure we are loving Him and loving people. When we all focus on His words and His methods, I think this thing we place such value on will happen and we will all fulfill our calling to simply follow Him.

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, Help us to keep the main thing the main thing. Show us how to love your people. Thank you for loving us and calling us to follow You. May we remember that You are the Purpose. Show us how to love You and to make You known. Amen.

Question for Reflection

How did you get asked to “Follow Me”? What has made that calling complicated?

I grew up knowing all the Jesus stories. I asked Him to be my Savior when I was a child. It wasn’t until college when I was away from my Christian “bubble” did I feel the call as to what “Follow Me” really meant. As life has progressed, the cares of family and the world around me have caused me to lose focus from time to time. It has seemed complicated ‘cause I want to know the details but rarely have any. This gets discouraging until I remember Who I am following.
