Promises in the Old Testament can be tricky as they are not always meant for us today. Jeremiah 29:11 is that kind of verse. And it is one that many of us can quote from memory. It was meant for the exile Jews living in Babylon to be reminded that God was thinking toward them, not just of them. They had forgotten, but God had not. And though this promise was originally for them, I do think the principle can be said of those who call Him Lord today.
That was my belief, until I doubted.
My daughter has some slightly significant developmental delays that she will never catch up to with her peers. She is 19, but mentally she is about 4 years old. She graduates from a local special education school this summer and then what? What does God “think toward” her? Are they thoughts of peace because I sure do not feel peaceful about what is next. And what about thoughts to give her a “future and a hope” which translates to a “hopeful end”? There have been some moments of rock bottom doubt.
But then I am challenged. Does God not love her more than I love her? Do I honestly believe that He has no plan, no “hopeful end” for her? And that is when about two years ago I began praying, “Lord, I know You have a plan and a purpose for Matthea. Help me to wait in peace, trusting that You will show us Your plan for her in Your time.” Some nights those words are simple and quick, other nights they are a cry from the deep places of my heart. It has been a lifeline that has kept me from slipping into a pit of doubt and despair. He has a purpose and a plan for me, but also one for all my children, even for Matthea.
How about you? Have you ever felt that God has a plan and a purpose for others, but not for you or for one of your loved ones? What Bible verse is your “go to” verse to help you during these times of doubts?
God is continuing to work on my control issues. I have this need to know what is going to happen or at least a blueprint of a plan. One of those lessons always revolves around finding a new home when we move. Most of the time, we do not find the place until days before we need to be out of the old place. I am not joking. It is not because we are terrible at looking for them, it just is that way. But God has been faithful each time to provide the home that we need in just the right time.
