Aging Gracefully

Aging Gracefully
“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.”
Isaiah 46:4

Scanning the aisles, I tried to think where they would be. I had never bought reading glasses before and sighed realizing that I needed them now.

“Excuse me, where are the readers?” I asked the store clerk who stopped filling the shelves and kindly walked me to the pharmacy where a display showcased different color and strength of glasses.

I picked a pretty tortoise shell pair and slipped them on noticing how much clearer the fine print was.

Blurry eyesight wasn’t the only change I noticed as I transitioned to middle age!

How can we age gracefully?

Be active. We keep our bodies healthy and strong by exercising, eating healthy, scheduling doctor appointments, and getting proper rest.

Reach out to others. Our families and ministries may look different than they did twenty years ago. Rather than chasing kids, we might be caring for elderly parents or missing friends who have come and gone.

We can cultivate new friendships by inviting a neighbor over for dinner, mentoring a younger woman, babysitting for a busy mom, or visiting a widow. Maybe we mend the strained relationship or offer support to the new global worker.

Remain faithful to God. As we age, we might be tempted to kick up our feet and sit on the sidelines, but we must persevere.

Our relationship with our Savior should grow sweeter as we keep it a priority. Daily prayer, memorizing Scripture, and meditating on His attributes are a few helpful disciplines.

Our Creator who never tires or ages! He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He promises to carry and sustain us through the seasons of life. It doesn’t mean that the seasons will be problem-free, but that He will walk with us through each of them.

“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” Isaiah 46:4

Aging isn’t a transition we think about very often until we need reading glasses to read this article. :) May we age gracefully by staying active, reaching out to others, and remaining faithful to God.

Closing Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for the different season of life and for walking with us through them. Thank you that you never change, tire, or age. Thank you that you are immutable. Help us to stay active, reach out to others, and remain faithful to you. Help us to not sit on the sidelines and think someone else will do it. Help us to persevere and bring glory to you. Thank you for your love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Question for Reflection

What other tip do you have for aging gracefully?

Recently, my mother-in-law gifted me a color session, where a lady held different colors of material against my skin and told me what colors look best. This was helpful because the right colors made my face look brighter.
For example, my mother-in-law has darker hair and looks nice in dark colors - red, dark purple, navy, etc.
I have lighter features and hair and look nicer in lighter colors - lavender, light blue, peaches, etc.
Finding our colors is another way to age gracefully.
