We will examine expectations that many women have about cross-cultural ministry, how they can contribute to burnout and depression, how to prevent and heal, and to understand a variety of emotions. We’ll spend time in personal discovery, reflection, and application AND connect, discuss, and process with other women on a deep level.

Exploring Expectations

We don’t often think about what our expectations are… until they aren’t met. We all have expectations about how effective we should be, how our teammates should act, and when God should intervene! When we are feeling angry, disappointed, or disillusioned, it might be in response to expectations we didn't know we had! In our time together, we will learn what women on the field often expect and how those expectations can play a role in burnout. We may discover that some of our expectations were unrealistic. Some were only perceived. Others seemed attainable but didn’t happen! So, what do we do with our expectations? Let’s learn together! We aren’t alone on this journey. We can encourage each other along the way and be reminded that God is at work in us and through us as we serve.

Understanding Emotion

Too often we are told, or we tell ourselves, “you shouldn’t be angry” or “there is no point in crying” not knowing just how much these false beliefs about emotion can be detrimental. In this session, we will be going over how to name, understand and process emotion. From this foundation, we will then review the differences between stress, depression, grief, and burnout. You will take away from this session the ability to self-assess your emotional and psychological state and better understand how to successfully use the God-given gift of emotions.

Burnout: What it is, Recognizing the Signs & the Path to Recovery

In this session, we will look deeper into what burnout is, where it comes from, signs we might be experiencing it, and what to do if we are burned out, including practical tips and resources. We will also discuss related topics such as how views of self can contribute to burnout, who is the most susceptible (it’s probably not who we think), and how our faith is affected by burnout.

An Ounce of Prevention: Guarding Against Burnout Day by Day

Burnout does not have to be a global worker’s inevitable outcome. The common saying, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," gives a wise approach for guarding against burnout. Adjusting our expectations, knowing our why, consistent grieving, checking our workload, and maintaining ongoing rhythms of effective soul care can help. In this fourth and final session, we’ll discuss and share practical ideas for averting the major causes of burnout. You will be given a chance to share ideas in breakout groups, reflect on your current rhythms, and take active steps to adjust them as needed. With some preventative measures, you can build a sustainable routine, maintain health, and even thrive.

*Sessions will be workshop-style, with teachings from our expert speakers, exercises for personal reflection and assessment, and discussion groups with other women. The Schedule

This virtual gathering is set up to accommodate women in time zones around the world. The Yellow Block and Blue Block options will provide the same teachings, but are separated so you can choose which block fits best with your time zone and your schedule.

When you register, you will choose ONE of the color blocks to join for the 2-day event.
